Project specification:

The Southern Expressway Extension Project, with a total length of 96km, is divided into four bidding sections; and CHEC is responsible for the construction of the fourth bidding section. The project is mainly comprised of the two-way six-lane (including four normal ones and two reserved ones) expressway section from Mattala to Hambantota and Hambantota Port Transport Hub Station, including the detail and design and construction. After its completion, the project will connect the Hambantota Port to the Hambantota International Airport, and provide direct access to the capital Colombo via the existing southern expressway and the outer ring expressway.

Characteristics and Significance of the Project:

The Southern Expressway Extension Project will greatly shorten the traffic time from Colombo to Hambantota Port, greatly facilitate the transportation between the two major ports and trade zones, and provides a large number of employment opportunities for the younger generation of Sri Lankans.
